I ran my first- ever 10k this morning in downtown Boston for the 3rd annual Boston Athletic Association 10k!
I woke up bright and early and immediately made a peanut butter smoothie. Aka, my perfect pre-run fuel that really sticks with me.
Perfection in a glass. I realized this week that I have PB smoothies all the time, but I’ve never actually posted my recipe. Look for it on the blog later this week 🙂
The hubby & I drove down to Back Bay, hoping to find parking right near the race start, and we did. For Boston, this is basically amazing. But I guess it was a Sunday morning around 7 AM…
The race start/finish was right in between the Boston Common & Boston Public Gardens, two places I had never actually been before. I got to walk right through the starting corrals beforehand, which were lined with American flags.
I got there pretty early, so we sat on the grass with Beans and chilled as more and more people started showing up.
We saw all these big banners laying in the grass, so I went over to see what they were.There were a bunch of Boston Strong banners with signatures all over from other races or cities showing their support for the Boston Marathon tragedy.
I found one from Colorado Springs, my hometown!
Before I knew it, I was making my third trip to the port-o-potties and getting lined up in the corrals.

As I was in the corral, they did some pre-race stuff, which was really nice.
The announcer speaking said a lot about how we are here today because we run strong, and that no one can stop us as a community of runners. There was a moment of silence for the victims of the Boston Marathon tragedy, as well as applause for certain first-responders present at the Boston Marathon that were also helping out today. They also had some students sing the National Anthem. It was really inspiring, and made me remember why I signed up for this race.
The race was an all-road out-and-back course. The first 2 miles went pretty well for me, but miles 2-4 were in pure sun. In those miles, the other side was the “back” part of the course, so it was one of those times where I kept thinking I was about to turn onto the back part, but it just kept on going!
I tried to push myself, but I definitely felt dehydrated to begin with due to the heat and humidity. There were a couple of times that I took water from the water stations and just poured it down my back – it was that hot!
As I was running, I was thinking about all the people around me and how each of them was totally different. Running feels and looks different for each person. But each person makes running work for them in whatever way they can.
I think it’s beautiful and encouraging that runners are all shapes and sizes, colors, and from all different backgrounds. But we all ran as one sea of determined, sweaty, motivated people in that race today.
I couldn’t have been happier when I saw the 6 mile mark. I tried to sprint the last .2 miles because I was just so happy to be close to being done. The hubby caught this action pic of me literally yards from the finish line.
Not the most flattering, but I’ll take it!
I finished in 58 minutes and 55 seconds, and I was finisher number 2,528 out of 5,436 runners. My goal was to run this in under an hour, but I was really hoping for around 55 minutes. I still think I did pretty good, though.
For any running nerds out there, here’s my splits according to Nike+. Nike+ said my average pace was 9:20. Not bad.

The 10k distance is definitely still a challenge, but a nice distance at the same time. It was a great experience, and I’d definitely love to do this race again next year.
