Summer is officially upon us (although I’m not sure this type of weather ever ends in Hawaii?). Since we move into our house Friday – eee! – I wanted to create a bucket list of things to do or try this summer and be intentional with some goals.
It’s been so long since I just had my own space that felt like mine and was able to do normal things like make French press coffee! My hope moving into this house is to start fresh in every way possible, creating good habits and truly enjoying our new space and new area we’re living in. So this post is a little less about summer and a little more about my personal goals with a summer twist on it.
Food & Drink
Make my own cold brew coffee. Since I’m still doing mostly decaf these days, I can’t go out and buy cold brew most of the time (it’s never offered in decaf, at least not here). I also want to kick my buying-coffee-all-the-time habit anyway. I’m planning on using Katie’s method. Looks super easy!
Make fruit infused tea. I saw a commercial for Lipton iced tea the other day and it just looked SO good. I am personally not a fan of Lipton, but I want to make some other kind of tea with fruit in it and keep it on hand for a quick refreshing drink.
Get on the Food Prep bandwagon. I don’t want to let all the awesome fruit from around here go bad! I want to focus on eating a TON of fruits and veggies since I’ve basically had very few for the past two months of eating without a kitchen. But I also know all my produce goes bad unless I prep it in advance.
Make our culinary experience a priority. Again, I’ve been missing the kitchen so much. Add to it that our new kitchen was just redone and is probably going to be my favorite room in the house, I wouldn’t mind spending a lot of time there this summer.
Some things on my list to make are:
- watermelon and feta salad (all the time please)
- a dish or dip in a pineapple boat
- grill all the things – seriously anything!
- Make a lot of salads for easy refreshing lunches and dinners
- Make something in my cast iron skillet. I just got one of these but haven’t used it yet. Ideas?
I hope not just to meal plan and meal prep to have food on the table but really enjoy cooking again. I really miss cooking with my husband too because that’s our thing, so I hope focusing on this will just be all around good for our whole family.
Home & Self Care
Bring back date nights. Except we kind of never had them, haha! When we lived in Texas, we knew no one and Claire was still just too little for me to be comfortable with a baby sitter. We are officially ready for a real baby sitter now that she is old enough and we are not in transition anymore.
My sister-in-law is coming to live with us for a few months/possibly longer, so she is clearly my babysitter of choice. I hope she agrees to baby sit a few times a month in exchange for living with us 😉
Get some alone time for myself. I operate so much better when I can have an outing alone, whether it be just going to the store solo or something more fun.
Some ideas are:
- go to the beach for an hour by myself
- grocery shop solo every other week
- Get a pedicure
- Once a month, have a whole morning/half a day out to do whatever
Thankfully my husband’s schedule is really accommodating, so I hope I can at least get out weekly for even just a small thing alone and then for a longer period of time once a month to really recharge my batteries.
Have a housewarming party. We can’t wait to use our new house to entertain people. It’s set up really well for entertaining so we’re hoping to have a party with some of my husband’s work friends (since those are the only friends we have right now – ha!) when we get settled.
Read five books. Reading is always my favorite but has been on the back burner for a while now. I’ve barely struggled through two books in two months, so I want to up my game. Five books sounds like a lot to me now, but at the start of the year I read five books in a month, so I know I can do it.
I am honestly just a happier person when I get that escape in reading, and I think summer is the perfect time to focus on it. I hope to find a good library here, or if not I have quite a few unread books (assuming I can find them when I unpack!). And hopefully jump back on Brie’s book club!
Make my own sunscreen. I have been dying to do this forever but it wasn’t feasible while we’re in the hotel.
Make my own sugar scrub again. I love my homemade sugar scrub and consider scrubs a necessary summer beauty product. I want to make a more tropical version with pineapple or lime maybe.
Try boogie boarding. I am not quite there with surfing yet, we’ll see. But I really want my own boogie board and to get out there in the ocean.
Get a new swimsuit. I have been wearing the same suits I had from well before I was pregnant or post-baby. Most my suits are strapless which is basically horrifying with a small baby pulling on you at all times. Definitely need an update!
Explore some new beaches. There are obviously endless options with this one. We have only been to the North Shore once and stuff in Waikiki. I really want to go back to the North Shore and also discover some beaches on the East side of the island where we will be sort of close to.
It’s exciting to have something new to look forward to. I’ve felt stifled in attempting to make any goals recently so it’s refreshing to look ahead and have a lot of options to keep me busy and focused on a happy lifestyle.
I’m okay if I don’t accomplish every single one of these things, but it does feel nice to put some ideas on paper (er, the internet) in an attempt to focus on them.
