Tuesday night, Beans broke his leg.
If you ask me how it happened, my initial response is I don’t know. I did see the whole thing happen, but it happened so fast. I was letting him out in the backyard to go potty. He was barking at another dog, on the other side of the fence. It got him so excited that he started running around, must have taken a wrong step or tripped, and then he started screaming.
If you didn’t know dogs could scream, I assure you mine can. Scream. Like none other. I came to him immediately to find him holding his left paw up. Once I picked him up, I immediately noticed that his wrist was just dangling. 🙁
Note: I don’t do well with this kind of stuff. I was home alone. I probably turned lobster red. I was shaking. I hate medical anything. I hate when it happens to a loved one, right in front of me. I called my husband, and then my vet and they directed me to an emergency vet.
My husband came home right away and took us to the vet. The drive was long and hard because I was trying to stabilize a whimpering dog over Boston-sized pot-holed roads for 20 minutes. Note: not fun.
We got to the ER and they took him away and let us wait. I was so thankful that they just took him and didn’t include us in anything that happened. They took 2 x-rays, gave him some pain meds, and wrapped his leg in a splint and covered it with a medi-paw glove.
They immediately recommended surgery above anything else, even though his break was very clean. It’s right near his wrist, but doesn’t look too complex.
I of course want to take the best care of him that I can, but we were in no state to decide what to do right then. The ER estimated the surgery to be anywhere from $2000 to $3000… They said that healing on it’s own is not a good option, but I don’t really see how the only options are not good or $3000. Before anyone is dropping 3 grand, we are going to do some research first and see how he does heal on his own.
They said we could come back in a month to get more x-rays and see if he is healing properly. Heal time is 8 weeks and the bandage needs to be changed every 2 weeks.
After we went home, I had to sleep with him on the couch to get him to rest. He kept crying in his crate. I think I got about 2 hours of sleep. Last night wasn’t great either.
It’s hard to believe that just last weekend he was chilling on the beach with his girlfriend.
For those of you who don’t have dogs, maybe this post sounds a little dramatic. But he is my baby! For those of you that do have dogs – I know you understand!
I was really, really upset about this at first, blaming myself for it and just being irrational. But now I’ve just realized that it is what is it. And I’ve got to take care of my little BLB – Broken Leg Beans. So far he is responding well to the meds they prescribed him, wags his tail when he sees us, and is pretty responsive for being a little drugged up. He can stand, but it’s pretty awkward and I’m trying to not let him walk at all.
Thanks to those of you who have already wished him well. I’ll keep ya updated.
