I’m so thankful that it’s Friday and a “snowday” for us North Easterners. My workplace called this morning to say they weren’t even opening for the day. So far, there’s only a dusting of snow, but apparently it’s supposed to start snowing soon and last two days. Yikes!
For breakfast, I had a strawberry smoothie and some toast.
To make the smoothie, I used:
- a whole banana, frozen
- a cup of fresh halved strawberries
- half a scoop vanilla protein powder
- about a cup of almond milk
It’s one of my favorite simple smoothies that gets me goin’.
Since last Friday, my focus has been on my goal of sticking to a morning and night routine. Friday, I woke up early, followed my schedule to a t, and it felt glorious. I relished in the accomplishment of getting up early, and waking up at 6 AM actually felt good. I felt refreshed, awake, and ready to take on the day.
The rest of the week has been quite a bit harder. Really – something about this whole week has just been off for me. I’ve been tired, cranky, and I think I pulled a muscle in my shoulder, which is causing a lot of pain. I have, for the most part, been able to get up on time every day. That’s actually not the hard part. But my mornings just don’t have a good rhythm to it yet. I’m hoping by next week that this routine starts to feel “normal.”
Unlike the mornings, my night routine has actually been very satisfying and I have stuck with it. To make sure I follow through with this, I set my phone alarm for 8:30 pm to remind me that it’s time to chill out. I tidy up a bit and head to the bedroom.
I have these cute little star lights (in photo above) around my mirror. I only used to use them on occasion, but now I turn them on to create a serene scene in my bedroom. I like low lights, maybe a candle or two, and then I retired to my bed to have some quiet time.
I got a basket this week to start keeping all my nighttime activities next to me in an organized way. In the basket, I have a couple of books, a few journals, and some aromatherapy sleep lotion. I get my basket out, pick something to do and enjoy my hot cup of tea. This is relaxation to me 🙂
Even though it sounds simple, making time for this routine at night is like, life-changing for me. Actually going to bed relaxed instead of anxious? AMAZING. One night, I felt myself drifting to sleep so peacefully. Most nights, I feel like I am up and up for a while until I finally just zonk out. Being able to feel myself fall asleep was just so nice. I felt relaxed enough to actually enjoy it!
This week wasn’t perfect by any means. I’m trying not to stomp all over my efforts by being frustrated at my lack of perfection, though. I am trying. Hopefully next week is less-cranky and more happy, though.
Lastly, I’ve got to mention some good eats I had this week.
I am normally not a big fan of tomato sauces, but this was too tasty not to scarf down. It also yielded a lot of leftovers, perfect for enduring this snowy weather over the weekend.
Last night, the hubs and I went to Whole Foods for a little dinner date. I’ve always wanted to try their food bar. We went a little late so there wasn’t much left or it looked like it had been sitting around for hours. We both got some pizza that was pretty good, though. To top it off, I got this giant cupcake. It’s a chocolate cupcake with chocolate ganache and raspberry filling inside. This made the crankies a little better 😉
For all of you caught in the storm this weekend, stay safe & drink plenty of hot chocolate!
