I stopped doing monthly baby updates for Claire at 12 months, so it’s been a good six months since I’ve “updated” about her. I really miss those updates sometimes. She has changed so much since her last one.
I thought it would be fun to do an update in letter form for her being 18 months now.
It really feels just like yesterday that you were a sweet six pound newborn in my arms, but in a way we are eons from that time. You are 18 months old, have all your teeth except molars, have made up words for things in our house (and use a few real ones too), love to be held, and sleep 12-13 hours at night (hallelujah!). The baby days seem so distant now in your full-fledged toddler-dom, but I wouldn’t trade it all for seeing you grow and develop into quite the little lady you’ve become.
You are extremely independent, love to do things yourself, and are curious about everything. Almost any attempt I make at “baby-proofing” our home, you can outsmart. You learned how to open the baby gate we got from Amazon that had 5 star reviews (none of which said kids could open it) in three weeks flat. You definitely don’t like being told no and have been having tantrums of throwing yourself on the ground for a few months now.
You went through a picky phase for a while and still don’t really like any meat, but you eat a ton now and are getting better at using a fork and spoon to feed yourself. Your current food favorites are string cheese, yogurt, waffles, and all fruit.
Other current favorites of yours are stuffed animals – you are often carrying one around with you and we always have to take a “lovie” in the car now, any toy that you can push or pull around the house, and watching a few shows like Sesame Street and Curious George on our tablet. Your attention span definitely seems to be getting longer, although never at the grocery store! We recently took your binky away during the day time, as you wanted it to be in your mouth 24/7. So far, it has gone well but we still use it at bedtime and for naps. We are thinking of trying to potty train you soon so only one of you is in diapers by the time your sister gets here, but we’re not going to push it.
I don’t know what you weigh, but I guess maybe 22 to 25 pounds. You fit into some 12 month still, most 18 month and some 2T size clothes now, depending on the brand. People still comment all the time on how tall you are.
In other news, you’re on your way to becoming a big sister!
While you don’t really understand what that means just yet, I have no doubt that you’ll fill the role of big sister in a way that only you can. I’m so excited to see you become that and watch you grow and play with your sister in a few months.
I feel like before I know it, you will be two and we will then be a family of four! A lot of changes are coming our way, but you continue to be such an adaptable child.
While being a mom is rarely easy, I love being your mom. I look at you and know you are my life’s greatest work and that God sent you into the world for a reason – and part of that reason is to grow me to be the woman He wants me to be. Some days I don’t feel like I’m on the right path and wish I was better at this mom thing, but all I have to do is look at you and see your smile and know that all is right in the world.
I love you to the moon and back, Claire Bear.
